History:
Incorporated in 1969, JET-A-WAY, INC®, was co-founded by Eddie and Darlene Jeter. With a $200 loan, a dump truck was acquired for the purpose of performing odd job cleanup service. Over the first nine years the company grew and with a loan from SBA purchased its first rolloff truck.  During the blizzard of 1978, the company plowed snow around the clock for three days for the City and the Army Corps of Engineers and earned over $500,000, which was immediately put back into trucks and other equipment. During the boom construction years of the 1980’s, the company grew rapidly. In 1989 construction was started on a building to house a state-of-the-art mechanical sorting system for construction debris. In 1989, a neighboring paper recycling operation was acquired. The transfer station was commissioned in September 1990 and three months later financing for the project was obtained through a tax-free, solid waste disposal facility revenue bond from the City of Boston.  Today the JET-A-WAY, INC®, transfer station located at 47 Kemble Street in Roxbury is the only licensed facility of its kind to handle solely construction and demolition debris. In addition JET-A-WAY, INC®, has a solid waste packer services division and cardboard & recycling fleet of vehicles handling commercial and residential waste throughout the greater Boston area.

In early 1991, the Boston construction boom totally collapsed and marketplace prices plummeted throwing the company into a loss position that looked bleak. In late 1991, Eddie succumbed to cancer and Darlene Jeter became President and CEO. She immediately resolved to keep the company going and growing.  A major cost reduction program was initiated and several significant disposal contracts were renegotiated, thereby averting a severe threat to the company’s future. New equipment was purchased and the company image was updated and brightened. In 1993 the company returned to profitability and resumed growing. To provide objectivity and advice to company direction, a board of directors was formed, and the first ever “Management Advances” were held to define a new mission statement and lay out a strategic plan for the future.

JET-A-WAY, INC®, is certified as a woman minority owned business by the Massachusetts State Office of Minority, the Women Business Assistance (SOMWBA), and MWBE certified with the city and state agencies.
